Five Myths That You Should Know About Family Portraits

Five Myths That You Should Know About Family Portraits.

There are 5 myths that I want to share with you about family portraits that will help you make a more educated decision.

Myth #1

MYTH #1 - "There's No Way That You Can GUARANTEE That I Will Absolutely Love My Family Portrait."

WRONG! "We guarantee that you will BE THRILLED - Not just Satisfied with your portraits or your money back!"

What does this mean? Well, if we take a photograph of your family and for some reason your daughter or son had a weird expression on their face and you thought the photograph was only "ok", then we will re-take it until you are thrilled. And if we still can't thrill you, then we will give you all your money back and you still can keep the photograph. What other photographer is willing to do this?

Let me repeat that - If Your Family or Children Don't Look the Best and Happiest That They Have Every Looked in Their Life - You Don't Pay Me!

That's my guarantee and personal promise that I make to you. What other photographers do you know that can make this promise? I can make this guarantee because I am confident in the quality of my work and I want to have a long-term relationship with you and thus willing to go the extra mile. I know that these photographs will be meaningless to you unless they convey the real emotions and relationships between you and your loved ones. I am sure that is your primary motivation in having a family portrait created.

In fact, I am totally confident that the portraits that I create for you will be beyond anything that you can imagine and will become your most prized possessions. Just ask yourself, what is the first thing people try to save from a burning down house? - their precious photographs of course!

Myth #2

MYTH #2 - "All Family Portraits Are Created Equal."

NOT SO. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you're like most people, you're probably thinking "How do I choose the right family portrait photographer?". After all, if you are going to spend good money, you want to get awesome family pictures in return, right? You may even be thinking that you can get Uncle Bob, or a sister, or a friend that has a camera and dabbles in photography to take these for you? Don't be fooled. Just because they may own an expensive camera, does not make them a good photographer - Just like owning an expensive instrument, doesn't make you a good musician. Like playing music, photography is a craft and art that takes a lot of hard work and experience to master.

Let me propose a question to you - "Suppose for a minute that someone was able to create the Perfect Family Portrait - One Where You And Your Loved Ones Looked So Relaxed and Cheerful - A Portrait That Would Be A Family Heirloom That Meant The World To You." What would that be worth? A million dollars? Two million dollars? No price tag can be put on your family's memories- these are and always will be absolutely priceless. So why would you ever want to gamble with those precious memories.

If you or a family member became sick and you needed to go to a doctor, would you choose the "cheapest" doctor or would you want the best? Well, if you truly loved your family, you would not settle for second best, would you? You can certainly find a cheaper photographer in town, but you won't find one that will give you the level of attention that I will. I throw my heart and soul into every session to create beautiful and emotionally meaningful family portraits for you.

Myth #3

MYTH #3 - "Family Portraits Have To Be Created In A Professional Studio - And They'll Probably Look Boring."

WRONG AGAIN! We have become conditioned to think that getting a PROFESSIONAL family portrait means standing in front of a boring background in a studio in our best Sunday attire in an un-natural pose and saying "cheeze". No wonder no one thinks this process is fun! At high-volume studios this is still the norm and the reason why you only get pictures and not "true" portraits. Being a boutique studio and dealing in lower volume, we can take the time to work with you to bring out the relationships among your family members, which will result in something that you will always treasure and not just gather dust in a small frame on a bookshelf.

Family portraits are much more casual these days and are often taken at some location that has meaning to your family or even in your home. Some scenic location where your family always plays together is a much more meaningful background than a studio backdrop. Picture for a moment the possibilities, which could be on your boat, or at your beach house, or even your favorite park. Typically you want it to be some place that brings up fond memories of your family.

Myth #4

MYTH #4 - "There is No One To Assist Me With Clothing, Hair, Makeup, and Location Choices."

NOPE. One of the reasons that we have a pre-portrait consultation or chat before the portrait session is to discuss the details such as clothing, hair, makeup, and locations. Many photographers don't want to take this extra time with you because as they say "time is money". BUT, we feel it is an important element in achieving the best photographs that your money can buy.

Decisions such as clothing can really make the difference in a portrait. Not only can the right clothing make you look slimmer, but the wrong clothing can make your family portrait look dated in a few years as being too trendy. As we all know, styles change with the times so its critical to pick clothing that will be classic and timeless, even if they are casual.

We also offer a service called a "Go-See", where we come in your home to take pictures of your walls and home decor so that we can design wall art to match the interior design of your home. Once again, this is one of the many services that we provide that makes us unique among professional photographers. We are much more than just photographers - we are also artists and designers. Furthermore, if we know the location of your portrait ahead of time, it will help us to select the proper clothing to match the decor, mood, and style of the room.

Myth #5

MYTH #5 - "There's No Rush To Having a Family Portrait Created Right Now."

JUST NOT TRUE. You know how things are. We all intend to do something and then get distracted and it never gets done. So, pick up the phone right now, and at least call me to schedule a no-obligation chat, where we can talk about your family portrait.

Do this now before you get swamped with other things and forget all about it. Then, before you know it, a year - two years- five years have gone by. How different will your family be then? As you know, time is ticking... and it's never going to stop and we will never have a chance to go back. First, your precious child takes his or her first step. Then, they learn to ride a bike. Later, goes to Prom and get's a Driver's License. Next, they graduate from High School and maybe College. Gets Married and starts their own family. Before you know it, these precious moments have slipped through your fingers.

We never know what life is going to give us. At the blink of an eye, we might lose a loved one and wish we had that family portrait that we could remember them by. So don't put this off any longer. In fact, call right now to set up a free chat. I know, we are all busy, but don't put this off. If your life is half as crazy as mine is, year after year you find yourself frustrated at the things you wanted to do, but never got done.

A family portrait is something that you deserve. In fact, your Family Portrait Will Become More Valuable To You Than Anything Else In Your Home. Do you spend lots of money on toys and equipment that don't last? Why not spend some money on something that will last forever. Just ask yourself, do you currently have a family photograph that you couldn't live without if your house was to burn down? No, I don't mean some snapshot that you took on a family outing or trip. I'm talking about a wonderful photograph, commissioned by a professional photographer, that not only captures your family's true expressions and relationships, but does so in a manner that you'd be proud to display openly in your home for the rest of your life.

So, how can you take advantage of these five myths?

  • Find a professional photographer that has an outstanding Guarantee and will even provide it in writing if asked
  • Only work with professionals that have been trained in the art of lighting, posing, clothing, and composition
  • Remember, owning an expensive camera does not make one a professional photographer any more than owning an expensive instrument makes you a great musician
  • Commission only the best family portrait photographer with a proven track record
  • Choose a location that has special meaning to your family¬†with good memories or activities such as out on your boat or the beach
  • Be sure to work with a professional who takes the time to meet with you prior to the session to discuss the details such as location and clothing
  • Bring clothing ideas to the design consultation with your photographer for his recommendations
  • Hire a professional that also is able to create special heirlooms that match a home’s decor
  • Remember that you are making an investment in your families history

P.S. Having family portraits taken is such a personal thing that you don’t want to trust this to just any photographer. Be sure to chose one that you both like and trust and feel comfortable working with. So, don’t take my word for it, read the comments from other families on this site and then come in for a free design consultation.
